The pink heart charm glistens as the curtain rises up, signaling the start of an omigon journey with one Elle Woods (Laura Bell Bundy), a determined young woman born to lead, whose blonde ambition evolves from lovesickness to valedictorian. With the help and guidance of friends, including confidants Emmett (Christian Borle) and Paulette (Orfeh), Elle realizes her potential and definitely wears it well. Indeed, confidence and integrity go with everything, no matter the season. Laura Bell Bundy, who captures Elle’s yes, I can spirit, fashionista pride, and caring heart, leads an overall good cast. The story is a bit changed from the film, which does make a difference as far as storytelling and pacing, but still, what you’re left with is a fun time and that’s nothing to object to. |

Practically perfect is how Mary Poppins describes herself, and the same can be said of the Broadway musical based on the P.L. Travers stories and the 1964 Disney film about the famous fantastical nanny. A spiffy production delivered with Disney sensibilities, neat visual images, clear moralistic messages, and sets tantalizingly designed by Bob Crowley to reflect a child’s perspective, Mary Poppins is driven not by Julian Fellowes disjointed book buy by the charm and energy of its score. Though sometimes over orchestrated, almost all of your favorite songs written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman for the movie are included here, as well as some new tunes by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. |
